3rd post
This week, I made two more beats, an old school rap type beat, and an R&B type beat. I really enjoyed making the old school rap type beat. while I was making it, I was thinking of one of my favorite old school rap artists: Eazy-E. he was one of the first rappers to create what is known to some as "Gangsta Rap". he talks a lot about the violence that occurs in the streets of compton in his music, and about how it has effected his life.
a key to old school beats is the drumline, so I really focused on making sure that sounded the way I wanted. this was a challenge at first, but I listened to some of the old school rappers I know of and studied the different sounds that were included in their instrumentals. after doing this, I was able to produce a sound that I felt was similar to this style of instrumental.
The other beat that I made was made for singing on, rather then rapping. This beat was harder for me to make and I dont think it was one of my best ones. the struggle was partly due to not being able to find ideal synths on the list of garage band sounds. another thing that I struggled with was actually creating a melody that I liked, which came as a surprise to me, as I usually have a natural feel for melody(as I should, seeing that my middle name is melodious). this is why I dont think the beat is quite up to par with the rest of them.
I am still working towards my goal of trying to make instrumentals that resemble that of specific artists, even though I managed to do that with my old school rap type beat, I still think I can do a better job of it in another one.
here is a ss of the old school rap beat:
Jonah, you are making nice progress! What kind of background in music are you bringing to this work? I know you mentioned you can't read music, but I wonder about what different kinds of music you have listened to in the past, as well as what appeals to you about creating your own music.
ReplyDeleteHi Jonah! As Maureen pointed out, it sure sounds like you´ve been making steady progress. I´m hoping that in your last blog entry you can share some examples of the beats you´ve created along with a bit more about your process. How challenging was it to try to recreate an old school feel while also keeping it uniquely yours? Easy E was big with some of my friends when I was in high school. Who else in that old school crew had instrumentals that inspired or influenced your work?
ReplyDeleteJonah! Great to see your progress in your beat-making. I can't wait to hear your examples. From the looks of the picture you posted, the patterns you created look good. Can you describe to your audience the difference between an "old school beat" and a "new school beat"? What "drummer" audio pattern did you use in the above picture? I am looking forward to hearing your presentation.
